📜 Pilates Day History

During his teenage years in Germany, he took part in various forms of physical training which inspired him to create his own system. The idea for this system came to him while he was imprisoned at the Knockaloe internment camp on the Isle of Man during World War I. In 1925, he moved to the United States where he met his wife, Clara, and together they established a studio in New York City. They personally taught students the principles of “Contrology” until the 1960s. The approach gained popularity and attracted many dedicated followers from the performing arts community in New York. Well-known dancers like Martha Graham and George Balanchine, who arrived in New York in 1923 and 1933 respectively, were both enthusiasts of Pilates. They sent their dancers to Pilates for rehabilitation and training regularly, leading others to do the same once they learned about the ballerinas’ involvement. Towards the end of his life, Pilates appointed one of his ballerinas, Romana Kryzanowska, as the director of his studio.
