The Romans are credited with inventing the earliest central heating system, which involved circulating hot air from a furnace through pipes in walls and beneath floors. Similar technology was also used in early Korea, where the air was heated using extra heat from cooking burners. Muslim architects of the past built pipes under floors to keep the entire structure warm.

In ancient Egypt, people would hang cold towels in their windows to cool their homes. The air contacting the towels would chill the occupants’ bodies. China invented fans that blew cool air across spaces near water fountains around 200 CE. Benjamin Franklin made significant progress in the 18th century by discovering how to freeze surfaces through chemical evaporation.

Albert Marsh’s discovery of chrome, an alloy of chromium and nickel, in the early 1900s revolutionized the electrical heating industry. This new alloy was 300 times stronger than other materials of its time, leading to the introduction of electrical heating components. Albert Marsh is widely recognized as the “father of the electrical heating industry” for his achievements. Finally, Willis Carrier pioneered the first modern air conditioner in 1902 by reversing the process used by a heater.
